Scarpetta
fare la scarpetta (v.) to tear a piece of bread and wipe the plate until none of the sauce is left.
Via Maqueda, 205, Palermo
Via Maqueda 205
A name that is
really an instruction.
Wiping the plate clean with bread is not polite. It is the highest compliment an Italian kitchen can be paid, and it is the one thing this restaurant chose to put on the sign.
You will find it at number 205, tables out on the pavement under cream umbrellas and strung bulbs, with the balconies of the old town opposite. Palermo walks past while you eat. The tables are close together and the street is loud, which is rather the point of eating on Via Maqueda at all.
